Ishinryu – meaning ‘All of One Heart’
Interview with Ticky Donovan in 2013
Ishinryu was founded by its world chief instructor Sensei Ticky Donovan 10th Dan OBE in 1973. Sensei Ticky was taught by Japanese masters of Kyokushinkai, Wado-Ryu and Shotokan. He combined the knowledge and skills he had gained to develop his own system of karate and opened his first club in Dagenham, London.
Ishinryu has spread far from these roots and is now taught around the world, with the first Australian club established in 1980. Since then, Ishinryu Karate Australia has been offering an exceptional martial arts experience in the Sutherland Shire for over 40 years.
With a combined experience of over 100 years, our team of black belt instructors have trained over 3000 students, including national coaches and Australian representatives.

Our Mission
Ishinryu Karate aims to develop its students into capable karateka while increasing their confidence, focus, self-discipline, fitness and coordination.
Our members range in age from 4 to 60+. This means that no matter your age, you can join a fun and welcoming martial arts community. We have innovative, dedicated kids and family programs and classes. We also offer a competition squad for both emerging and established sport competitors. This is available for all grades and ages 8+.
Ishinryu Karate promotes a family-friendly atmosphere, and encourages members to work towards achieving their black belt and beyond. The club has experienced and highly accredited black belt instructors. It provides a safe and supportive environment. The club offers innovative programs and classes for everyone from children to competitive athletes. Joining the club offers an opportunity to improve confidence, focus, self discipline and fitness.
